Haikus

Syllables
A syllable is a way that we break up our words to create rhythm.  You may remember elementary school when you sat in circles, 'clapping out' words.  This is, still, one of the best ways to figure out how many syllables a word has.  The internet, however, has alternate options.

For example, "syllable" has three syllables in it.
Syll / a / ble

1.  Calculate
Cal / cu / late

2.  Friendship
Friend / ship

3.  Adventure
Ad / ven / ture

Phrases also have syllables in them.  For example:

1. Catwoman is Confusing
Cat / wo / man / is / con / fu / sing

2. Batman fought the Joker
Bat / man / fought / the / Jo / ker

Haiku
A Haiku is a type of poem that has a specific number of syllables in each line.  The syllable count in 5 / 7 / 5.  This means the first line has 5 syllables and the second line has 7 syllables and the last line has five syllables.

Example:
By the southern shore,
towering above the clouds,
blocked by urban sprawl.

5.  By / the / south / ern / shore
7.  tow / er / ing / a / bove / the / clouds
5.  blocked / by / ur / ban / sprawl
Note that the lines meet the syllable counts.  This is the main feature which makes a haiku a haiku.

Assignment
